Course Overview
The Exploring Modernist Literature course provides an in-depth introduction to one of the most influential literary movements of the twentieth century. Modernist literature emerged during a period of profound cultural, political, and social transformation, and it introduced new narrative techniques and experimental styles that reshaped the landscape of literary expression.
This course begins by examining the origins and key characteristics of modernism. Learners will explore how historical events, technological progress, and changing social values influenced writers to challenge traditional storytelling methods and develop innovative literary forms.
Participants will study the stream-of-consciousness narrative technique, a defining feature of modernist writing that captures characters’ inner thoughts and emotions in a fluid and psychological manner. This narrative style allowed authors to portray the complexity of human consciousness in new and compelling ways.
The programme also explores themes of fragmentation and multiple perspectives, where writers broke away from linear storytelling to reflect the uncertainties and disruptions of the modern world. These techniques offered readers a more complex and layered understanding of characters and events.
Another key focus of the course is the cultural and literary impact of the post-war era, including influential works such as modernist poetry and reflections on the societal aftermath of global conflict. Learners will understand how literature responded to the disillusionment and cultural shifts that followed major historical events.
The course further highlights important movements associated with modernism, including the Harlem Renaissance, which celebrated African American cultural expression, and the contributions of modernist women writers who expanded literary perspectives and challenged social conventions.
Participants will also examine philosophical influences such as existentialism and explore postcolonial perspectives that reshaped interpretations of modernist literature across different cultures.
By completing this course, learners will gain a deeper understanding of modernist literary techniques, cultural contexts, and the influential writers who shaped this transformative literary movement.
